About Me

My name is Jen Hathorn. I'm a family medicine physician. Since January 2015 I have been living in Egbe Nigeria, which is in Kogi State. I am serving at a bush hospital practicing full spectrum family medicine. I am working with an organization called World Medical Mission which is a part of Samaritan's Purse. This blog is my place to stay connected with you through stories, meditations and pictures. I hope that you enjoy reading the posts!

Meet Dr Dana and Dr Joseph

Meet Dr Dana Iglesias! Although many people here in Nigeria think that she must have Nigerian heritage, she really doesn't (her last name is a hint to where her family roots lie). She grew up in the good 'ol USA where she completed medical school and residency. She is fellowship trained in Maternal Fetal Medicine and loves working with mothers and babies. She is the head of the family medicine residency here at Egbe and takes her role seriously. I am learning so much from working with her and appreciate her no nonsense approach to dealing with life in an often times chaotic environment. She will be my mentor during my time here in Egbe and I am looking forward working with her and simply sharing life together in the African bush!

Meet Dr Tony Joseph! He is the head trainer of the residents and one of the most chill guys you could meet. He has a great appreciation for humor and his laugh is infectious. Don't let his quite tone of voice betray his great understanding of medicine or his valuable experience working in rural settings. He is often the one that Dr Dana and I rely on to help understand some of the cultural differences in medicine here in Nigeria compared with the US - what an incredible resource! He did some of his training here at Egbe and is now back in an attending role because he felt God called him serve here. He has a wife and 3 kids who live about 2-3 hours away in a larger city. He visits them as much as he can. Being apart from them is a sacrifice not many would make. Privileged to work with Dr J.

... As a side note...my chicken was consumed in a tasty meal of roast chicken and rice!!

Back to work!
