About Me

My name is Jen Hathorn. I'm a family medicine physician. Since January 2015 I have been living in Egbe Nigeria, which is in Kogi State. I am serving at a bush hospital practicing full spectrum family medicine. I am working with an organization called World Medical Mission which is a part of Samaritan's Purse. This blog is my place to stay connected with you through stories, meditations and pictures. I hope that you enjoy reading the posts!

Truly Happy

Summer is so much fun! In upstate NY summer means the grass is green, the sun is (usually) shining and it's warm outside! Perfect for jumping, running wild and playing all day long. I am spending this summer with my parents in Ithaca as I prepare to move to Egbe Nigeria in January. One of the best perks of living here is that I can spend time with the coolest cats around - my nieces and nephew. What could be better than laughing your way through trail runs, watching the horses run and eat, making dinner together for family and friends, and roasting marshmallows around the fire at night? Summer is so much fun! I am truly happy!

I am truly happy because I can be. I can be happy because the blood of Jesus washes my heart clean. And with a pure heart there is no hindrance to experiencing joy. Have you ever tried to be happy when things weren't right in your heart? It just isn't the same! It's a superficial happy that disappears quickly when circumstances change, or when there is a pause in the excitement and your inner unrest captures the moment again. I've been thinking about this lately because in a few months my circumstances will change. Upstate NY will become Egbe Nigeria. My family and friends will be on the other side of the world and I will be surrounded by new people and new friends. It will be a new culture, new food, and a new language.  It may not always be as fun as this summer, but I can still be truly happy!

"Blessed (truly happy) are the pure in heart: for they shall see God."
- Matthew 5:8
